Date: June 11, 2003, June 12, 2003 Author's Note: This takes place after "Existence" and before "Nothing Important Happened Today". I hope you like it! "I'll see you Monday morning." John Doggett said to Monica Reyes as he left the elevator. "Bright and early." She said, smiling back. The elevator doors closed, leaving Monica alone. She watched as the floors started an incline. The elevator stops on the fifth floor and the doors open. To her surprise, Brad Follmer stands waiting. Brad is looking down at a file in his hand, not paying attention to the elevator. He looks up as he enters and his breath is taken away. "Monica?" Brad says a little confused. He gets on the elevator. "Brad?" Monica says, with the same confusion. The doors closed. "I thought you were in New Orleans." "I was." She says, smiling at him. "Agent Doggett needs my help on a case. Weren't you in New York?" "I was. I got promoted to A.D. here at the Hoover Building." "Movin' on up." She replies with a smile. The elevator doors open once again. "This is where I get off." She says. "We should get together sometime and catch up." "Yes." Brad says. "Here's my number." He writes a phone number on the back of his business card. "Call me sometime." He hands it to her with a smile. "I will." She smiles at him. The elevator doors closed. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Friday night had gone by smoothly. Monica hadn't called Brad, but enjoyed an evening by herself seeing the newest romantic comedy that was in theatres. Saturday had flown by with a breeze, and now night had fallen. Monica Reyes sat alone in her hotel room. The evening news was just wrapping up. Her eyes wondered their way over to the business card Brad had given her with his phone number on it. She gets off her bed and picks the card up off the table. Two years have passed since she had seen Brad, and her feelings for him hadn't gone away. She stared at the number on the card. Her eyes looked at the phone and she picked it up and dialed his number. It rang twice. "Hello?" Brad's voice came through the phone. Monica paces the room, a little nervous. "Hi, Brad?" She says nervously. Why did that come out as a question? You know it's him. Monica thought to herself. "Monica?" Brad asked over the phone. "Yeah, it's me." She says, having to sit down on the bed. "How are you?" "I'm doing good. Yourself?" "Good." She takes a deep breath. "I was wondering if you are doing anything tomorrow night, and that maybe we could catch up over a drink or something." "That would be great." Brad said, relieving her nerves. "I know this small little restaurant. I think you'll like it." "Ok. Where is it?" Monica asked. As he gave her directions to this little restaurant, she couldn't help but think about the last time she had seen Brad up in New York. She had left with out a warning and broke his heart. She had her reasons, and New Orleans brought her opportunity. "Yeah, I think I can find it." Monica said after he finished telling her directions. "How about we meet there at seven." "Seven sounds good to me." "Ok. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye." "Bye." She sets the receiver down and smiles to herself. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The alarm clock went off with a shock, and Monica slowly made her way over to it and turned it off. She looked at the time. It was eight in the morning already. Excitement hadn't allowed her to sleep last night. She slowly sat up in bed, wearing a comfortable silk black nightgown, and got up to begin her day. That evening, she picked up the phone and dialed a number. "Hello?" Came a friendly female voice over the phone. "Hi Kate, it's Monica." "Oh hey. How's D.C.?" Kate asked. "Business as usual." Monica answered. "Even with that attractive friend of yours. He's single you know." Kate said. "Who? John?" Monica asked. "Yeah, he is the one in the picture I saw, isn't he?" "Yeah... but he's my partner." Monica said. "Anyway... do you remember me telling you about Brad?" "Yeah, he's the one who's heart you crushed, right?" Kate asked. "Yeah." Monica says, not proud of what she did. "I'm getting together with him tonight to catch up." "You're in New York?" Kate asked with surprise. "No... he's an Assistant Director here in D.C." "Wow... seems like fate to me." Kate says. "You still have feelings for him, don't you." Monica lets out a sigh. She tried to convince herself she was over him, but seeing him again told her that she was wrong. "I guess I haven't lost that lovin' feeling." Monica answered. "Well hey, what girl wouldn't want a man like that?" Kate says. "Believe me, there aren't that many good fish in the sea. He's single isn't he." "Yeah." Monica says. "And so are you. So what harm could it do." Kate says. "What do you have in mind for tonight?" "We're going out for dinner. Catching up on old times." "You don't want to catch up on old times too much and get carried away ya know." Kate says. "What do you mean?" "I mean, don't shave your legs. It'll stop you from going too far." Monica smiles and laughs. "I'm not gonna go home with him tonight if that's what you're thinking." Monica says. "Well, I'm just sayin'..." "You're always 'just saying', Kate." Monica says with a smile. "I have to go now." "Call and tell me how it goes." Kate says. "Ok." Monica says. "I'll talk to you later." "Bye." She hangs up the phone and looks at her clock. In a half hour she's be meeting with Brad... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The restaurant is indeed small, dimly lit, and with soft music playing. Brad Follmer sits at a table in the back of the restaurant wearing a nice casual suit. He checks his watch. Monica is running late. A waiter brings him his drink. "Are you ready to order?" the waiter asks. "Not yet. Thank you." The waiter leaves, just as Monica comes through the door to this empty restaurant. She's wearing black slacks and a black button up shirt, not buttoned up all the way. She spots Brad and gives him a smile as she walks over to him. He stands to greet her. "You look lovely." Brad tells her. Monica smiles. "Thanks." "Did you have trouble finding the place?" Brad asks. "Yeah, I took a wrong turn down M street and ended up going down Bennett avenue instead." She laughs at herself. "Maybe it was fate because there were some nice apartments down there, and I'm going to need a place to live." "That's a quiet neighborhood." Brad says. "I noticed." The waiter comes over to their table. "What would you like to drink, miss?" the waiter asks Monica. "Um... I'll have a lemonade please." The waiter nods his head and walks away. "Daring choice..." Brad says with a teasing tone. "I thought I'd take a chance." Monica says with a smile. "Do you come here often?" "On occasion." Brad answers. "I bet you bring all the girls here..." "Just you." Brad says and smiles at her. Monica smiles back. "Two years is a long time..." Brad says. The waiter comes and sets Monica's lemonade down. "Thank you." She says to the waiter. "Yes, maybe too long." "So what have you been doing?" Brad asks. "I know you took that transfer to New Orleans and that's it." "Well, I was a specialist on ritualistic cult crimes down there for the New Orleans field office." Monica says. "Get a lot of calls down there?" "The usual. More so down there than up here." "So why come back here?" "I told you Agent Doggett needs my help on a case, right?" Brad nods his head. "Well, he's kind of assigned me as his new partner on the x-files." "The x-files... that hits your interest." "Yeah, it's like a dream assignment." She takes a sip of her lemonade. "Actually, this is going to sound obscure, but we're actually investigating the Deputy Director." "Kersh?" Brad asks surprised. "It's a long story... So, you're an Assistant Director now?" Monica asks, not wanting to talk about her work anymore. "Yes that's correct." Brad says. "After you accepted the transfer to New Orleans, I got the promotion." "That's great." Monica says with a smile. "I wasn't expecting it so soon." Brad says. "I guess I thought I needed more field work before getting that kind of promotion... the Director thought differently." The waiter once again comes up to their table. He takes their orders and walks away. "May I ask you something?" Brad asks. "Of course, I'm an open book." Monica replies. "Why did you leave without telling me?" Monica's smile fades and she looks away from him. "I don't know." Monica says quietly. "I guess I..." she lets out a sigh. "I didn't know how to tell you." "Tell me what?" Brad asks. "That you got a promotion and were getting transferred down to New Orleans?" "I guess so." Monica says. "I didn't want anyone to get hurt." "Did you think I wouldn't understand?" Brad asks. "When you left without a word, I got the impression that you were mad at me." "I wasn't mad at you, Brad." Monica assures him. "I guess I thought it would've been easier just to leave. I hate to say 'good bye'." She takes another sip of her drink. The waiter comes and drops off their food. "Thank you." Brad says to the waiter as he leaves. "I'm sorry I did that to you." Monica says. "Don't be sorry, Monica." Brad says, reassuring her. "You had your reasons." He takes a bite of his food. "I have to admit that I tried to get over you." Monica says. Brad looks up at her. "Tried?" He asks, looking her in the eyes. "I had myself convinced that I was over you." Monica says, as she takes a bite out of her food. "It's good." She smiles at him. There is a moment of silence. "When I saw you on Friday, in the elevator, I realized I was wrong about being over you." Monica says. There is another moment of silence. "Me too." Brad says softly. Monica looks over at him, and their eyes lock. Suddenly, the song "I Fall To Pieces" by Patsy Cline starts to play. They both listen for a moment. Brad looks at Monica. "Would you like to dance?" Brad asks. "Yes." Monica says with a warming smile. Brad stands up and offers his hand to her. She takes it and they head to the dance floor. Brad takes her in his arms, and hold her close. Being this close to one another feels natural. Monica rests her head on his shoulder. "You want me to act like we've never kissed, You want me to forget, Pretend we've never met, And I've tried and I've tried, but I haven't yet - You walk by and I fall to pieces." "Brad?" Monica says softly. "Yeah?" "Each day I was in New Orleans, I missed you more and more." Monica says. "Being this close to you only brings back so many wonderful memories of when we were in New York together." She looks up into his eyes, and he into hers. She slowly moves her way towards his lips, first giving him a small brush of a kiss. They don't pull away, lingering in this teasing state. Neither one of them wants to wait any longer and they both move in and kiss each other passionately. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ They tried to resist. They didn't mean for the night to end this way, but that kiss meant so much to both of them. Resisting was not an option. Monica's hotel room door opens and Brad and Monica enter, shutting the door behind them, still locked in a kiss. They make their way over to the bed where they fall down. Brad unbuttons her shirt. Kissing her neck gently, furthering their act. Two years are boiled up in each of them, letting it all out now... Several hours pass and they fall asleep in each other's arms. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Morning arrived quicker than Brad would've liked. His watch was beeping, waking him up at six in the morning. He quickly and quietly moved to turn it off, not wanting to wake Monica. He looks at her sleeping peacefully, and gives her a kiss on the cheek, then getting out of bed to get dressed and go into work. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The phone rang loudly, waking Monica up. She looks around the room and sees that she is alone. She slowly answers the phone. "Hello...?" she said in a tired voice. "Monica, it's me. Did I wake you?" came Brad's voice over the phone. "Brad?" Monica was a little confused on why he would be calling her. "No, I'm... awake." "You're in town." He says with a hint of flirtation in his voice. Monica waits a beat in confusion as he says this. Then lightly smiles as she realizes the game he is playing. "Yeah. I came in on short notice." She says. "If you're coming to the Hoover Building, can you stop by my office?" Brad asks. "Yeah. Sure. I can do that." Monica says, not too sure with what he has in mind. "Good. I'm looking forward to it." Brad says. Monica smiles and hangs up the phone. Letting out a sigh and falling back into her bed, still exhausted from the nights activities, and not yet ready to face the working days of the week. THE END.
